Wildland fires have dominated the news in the past several years where it often seems that large chunks of the United States are burning. While the reality does not match the perception, wildland fires are a massive issue that will only be increasing in the number of occurrences and severity in the future. This presentation focuses on the significant environmental issues associated with wildland fires from huge erosion and deadly debris flows to the large potential costs associated with habitat loss and restoration. This presentation discusses the post fire risks associated with each of these environmental issues with emphasis on their characterization and potential mitigation measures. The audience members who have exposure to wildland fires or an interest in their environmental impact will benefit from learning about the environmental risks associated with these all too common events. Audience members who are corporate counsel will benefit from being aware of these issues and their risk exposure.
